About
the Department
Department for fruit farming and olive growing is occupied
with research work on fruit varieties represented in
coastal area in Republic of Croatia, primarily on olive,
almond, marasca cherry, cherry and peach. Research purpose
is introduction of new technologies for maintaining
of existing and raising of new plantations, that will
optimally use favourable ecological conditions of this
area and secure profitable production and family farming
development.
Experimental oil refinery in Kastel Stari works as
a part of Department, where the olive processing to
olive oil is done in a traditional way, and the influence
of cultivars, different agricultural and pomocultural
operations and fruit conservation till processing on
oil quality is researched.
As a Department property there are experimental collection
plantations of olives, almonds, marasca cherry, cherry,
Prunus mahaleb, GF, Amygdalus
webbii and some fig genotypes in Split and in Katel
Stari, where the considerable part of genetic material
of those cultures represented in Croatia is
collected, that is used for further researches and for
exchange of genetic resources with different national
and international institutions.
As a Department property there are also a greenhouse
where the experimental seedling production is done,
and later is used in researches or is deposited in genetic
bank, and laboratory where the laboratory researches
are done.
Department cooperates with related institutions and
organizations in Croatia and abroad through mutual visits,
with exchange of informations and
publications and biological material, and participates
on national and international meetings concerning the
problems linked to fruit and olive
growing.
