the department
Pests and disease management in agro-ekosystems of
Mediterranean part of Croatia last more than 100 years.
The Entomological department established in 1925 was
the forerunner of today department. Petar Novak was
the first head of the Department and famous for his
researches on Dalmatian Coleoptera.
This Department was the first to apply IPM (Integrated
Pest Menagment) in olive growing in this part of Mediterranean.
Different metods for the olive fly (Bactrocera oleae)
and the olive moth (Prays oleae) control have been researched
and applied:
- laboratory reared parasite wasp Opius concolor was
released against the olive fruit fly (biological control);
- the possibility of its control with sterile males
(sterile male tehnicque) was done on isolatet islands
of Kornati in cooperation with the Entomologic laboratory
of an International agency for the atomic energy
Vienna;
- parasite wasps Chelonus eleaphilus and Trichogramma
oleae were released against olive moth, etc.).
Today, the special research involvement is destructive
and useful entomophauna in olive, citrus and vegetable
growing. The latest subject of investigations is whitefly
