The history of the Department

The production of vegetables has a long tradition in this area. With the opening of the Agricultural studies in 1905 within the existing Experimental station, vegetable growing is treated as a special course. Since then the education of producers and resarch work on introduction and selection of new vegetables cultivars as well as improvement of production technology have been conducted. The Institute has played the important role in development of floriculture sector in Croatia, basically by starting the production of carnations and gerbera transplants. Additionally, the intensive work on improvement of cut flowers production has been done.

Research

The scientists conduct research in the open field and greenhouses on vegetable and flower species of commercial importance for the Medditeranean part of Croatia. The main activities are introduction and evaluation of vegetale and flower cultivars, as well as implementation and improvement of growing technology. Besides the experiments on Institute facilities, the research is conducted on family farms as well.
